“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—  not by works, so that no one can boast.  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Walt was born in St. Louis and have lived in Missouri, Maryland, Indiana, New Hampshire, Illinois, and China.  He has been married to Susan (aka Peggy) for over 48 years and they have two daughters - Rachel and Julia.  They also have six grandchildren, ranging from age 13 to 23.  He enjoys spending time with them every chance he gets.

Walt has been a member of St. Luke’s for 14 years and have taught Confirmation and Adult Bible Study.  Peggy and Walt have sung in St. Luke’s choir.  Most recently, he became chairperson for the congregation’s Evangelism Board.

Traveling on Mission trips has been a real passion for Walt.  He has been on several short-term mission trips all over the world - most recently Belize, South Africa, and Guatemala)  His hope and dream is to be able to continue serving in this way.  He also invites anyone and everyone to join him on one of these life-changing experiences!

You should know that Walt is the product of Lutheran education, having gone to Lutheran elementary schools, high school, colleges and seminary.  In fact, Peggy and Walt met at Concordia College, Bronxville NY where they sang in the choir together.

Walt is committed to education and learning, having taught both here in the States and also in China.  A lot of his teaching has been at the middle school and high school level, but for the last 11 years he has been involved in adult education teaching English as a Second Language at the Pui Tak Center in Chicago’s Chinatown.  For the last 6 years at Pui Tak he served as the administrator of the Adult Education program at Pui Tak, with a staff of 30 teachers, 5 support staff and a student body of over 800.  He retired from that position in June of 2023.

The overriding prayer Walt has is that the Lutheran School of St. Luke will continue to be the Gospel Light shining the Good News about Jesus for the children and families of our communities just as we have been doing for 138 years!  God has wondrous things in store for Saint Luke!  And Walt is glad to be a part of it!
